One on One Consults and Training

For many dog and horse behaviour challenges, a private consultation in your home or at your agistment is the ideal starting point. I prioritise creating a safe and comfortable environment for your animal friend, so in some cases (e.g., extreme fearfulness), I may recommend a virtual consultation or meeting at a neutral location.

What to Expect During a Behaviour Consult

We’ll begin by discussing your animal friend’s history and specific problems you’re concerned about. I’ll ask questions, and you’ll have plenty of opportunity to do the same. I’ll also observe your dog or horse.

Together we’ll develop a tailored management and training plan, which may include foundation exercises and behaviour modification strategies.

I’ll guide you through foundation training and behaviour modification techniques, demonstrating them with your animal friend if they are comfortable.

You’re encouraged to take notes during the session. Parts of sessions can be recorded for your reference, allowing you to review the information and exercises at your convenience.

Important Note: The well-being of your animal friend is a top priority. If they become distressed during a consult (online or in-person), we will adjust the session as needed, which may include pausing, switching to a different format, or rescheduling.

Initial consults take 1 – 1.5 hours.

What Happens After the Behaviour Consult?

  • You’ll receive links to any videos recorded during the session.
  • Relevant supplementary information, such as links to resources, will be provided.
  • With your permission, I may update your veterinary care team or other relevant professionals involved in your animal friend’s care.

Ongoing Support: I’m here to support you every step of the way.

  • Regular follow-up appointments (typically 30 minutes) are essential for monitoring progress, adjusting plans as needed, and ensuring you have the skills and knowledge to succeed.
  • You can send me two short (under 10 minute) videos between appointments for feedback.
  • Regularly share your behaviour log or other relevant information before each appointment.
  • I’m also available for quick questions between appointments via email or text (within reasonable limits).

What to Expect During In-person Training Appointments?

These sessions, typically one hour for the initial appointment and 30 minutes for follow-ups, focus on teaching your dog or horse new skills. I’ll assess their current training level, guide you through specific exercises demonstrating them with your animal friend if they are comfortable and create a plan for continued progress. Parts of sessions can also be recorded for your reference.

Behaviour Consult or Training - Which Do You Need?

A behaviour consult is generally recommended when your animal friend is experiencing an emotional response, such as fear or anxiety. Training focuses on teaching new skills.

Think of it this way: training is like learning a musical instrument, while behaviour modification is like overcoming a fear of public speaking.
